Put a door on my tree

Inspired by seeing fairy garden things and my nephew .

My 4 year old nephew asked about the hole in the tree. I told him it was a fairy door. He proceeded to smash it with a rock and yell, “FAIRIES!!! COME OUT!”

But it reminded me of fairy gardens I’ve seen and I decided to make the door.

Started by cutting thin strips of cedar.

Eyeballed and cut them to length.

Used the tape to keep the layout.

Used Lexel(damn good stuff) to glue supports across the backside.

Did some primer

Then I decided to round out the edges a bit.

Painted red.

Pretty much all done.

For the door knob I used one of these

and a short 8-32 brass screw.

I want to add some sort of lock to keep my nephew from destroying it. But he’s clever, and if I just use a padlock type thing, he’ll ask how they get out if it’s locked from the outside.

I’m really happy with how it turned out. Might make a porch and stairs for it one day.

I also ordered a bunch of those creepy things from Princess Mononoke. Gonna place them at random places on the tree .

They glow in the dark, so it’ll be fun to see my nephews reaction.

I really love this! This is an inspired project. I’m not sure about the creepy figures, but my imagination goes in a more classical fairy direction, and it’s not my tree.

Thanks! I’ve got some more traditional things nearby already that my mom gave me once she found out I was doing this. I’m not sure about that particular leprechaun...

As to a lock, you’d probably have to go online to find it, but maybe something intended for like a desk drawer or jewelry box or similar?

I’m curious as to what the name is for those threaded spheres you used for the door knob?

I sneakily set one on the ground while he was searching for all of them last night. He was all cautious picking it up cause he didn’t want to hurt it. I t was so adorable.

He named him Dude and took him home with him today. :)
